   本作は1983年にヨーヨー・マが初めてバッハの無伴奏チェロ組曲をデジタルでレコーディングしたもので、当初はLPでリリースされた。その後1998年に、あるビデオシリーズのサントラ用に同曲を再度レコーディングしている（『Bach: The Cello Suites Inspired By Bach, From The Six-Part Film Series』）ので、以前の演奏と聴き比べることができ、興味深い。
   幸運にもコンサートでヨーヨー・マが実際にこの曲を演奏するのを聴いたことがある人は、この2つの演奏のどちらも彼の最高のバッハではないことにすぐ気付くだろう。最初の方は、比較的素直な解釈で優雅に演奏され、芸術性も高いが、やや情感に欠けるところがある。2番目の方は、もっと感情豊かにはなっているが、かなり自意識が強いような印象を受ける。どちらも、バッハの偉大な音楽を具現化した価値ある演奏であることは確かだ。しかし、シュタルケルの最後の演奏に見られるような円熟した感銘は与えてくれない。おそらくそれが、ヨーヨー・マが3度目のレコーディングで達成することになる点だろう。（Leslie Gerber, Amazon.com）
