身体の文学史

解剖学者としての知見をもとに、現在の「脳化社会」をさまざまにとらえてきた筆者が、近・現代小説を分析して、日本文学史、さらに日本人と日本文化に対して大きな視点からの批評を試みた、スリリングな問題提起の一書である。筆者によれば、江戸時代は心＝脳をもって、「身体という自然」を隠蔽した人工社会であり、そこでは「型」が大きな力を占めていた。近代もその延長として、一方で「個」の幻想を求めて型を喪失していきつつも、精神が身体を抑圧した社会であり、漱石の『こころ』はまさにその象徴であった。芥川龍之介の中世（江戸以前）への注視は身体回復の指向を見せつつも、それは「心理という人工」に絡み取られているという。森鴎外、小林秀雄、大岡昇平ほか日本文学史に登場する作家は、押しなべて「身体」そのものから遠ざかったところ�hroughout the season and determine which team will compete in the 25 post-season Pro Bowls.
